We’re well known for printing great quality vinyl banners that stand up to all that the weather can throw at them. In fact ours are guaranteed against fade for 4 years… so make sure you use plenty of colour on your next vinyl banner project. However, choosing the right colours when promoting your company or displaying your marketing message can be a tricky task. That’s why we’ve produced this handy guide on how colours are used in advertising.

Black

  • Anything related to darkness, such as a thriller, horror movie, video games.
  • Black is probably one of the most used colour in advertisement, simply because it’s the best colour to create contrast and make it visually more interesting for the viewer.
  • Anything related to luxury products such as fragrances or jewellery represents the elegance and quality.
  • Black is well used for Chocolate marketing, as it provokes desire and excitement.

Brown

  • Anything related to the wood or nature.
  • Apparently, Brown is often used to appeal to men!
  • Brown is also used to advertise restaurants or food…. maybe that’s why it appeals to men?!
  • It can be used when advertising outdoor activities, cycling, mountain holidays, cabin breaks.

Grey

  • Anything related to dirt. It can be used it cleaning advertisement (before it’s grey and dirty, after is white and clean!).
  • It’s also supposed to be the favourite colour of geniuses, so if you’re product or brand is a bit more cerebral, then grey might be for you.

White

  • Clean, simple and easy to work with… but maybe not the greatest colour for creating stand out.
  • Anything related to the cleanliness, relaxation, etc.
  • With black this combination of colours is used by luxury brands all over the world.
  • Note that the white is widely used to create great contrast particularly with the black and all dark shade colours, making text very easy to read.

Red

  • Cars, events, passion, sport, red is used a lot in advertising as is supposed to draw attention.
  • Any products that attract a sudden ‘need’ such as foods or fizzy drinks such as Coca-Cola.
  • Any warning advertisement.

Purple

  • Purple is linked to royalty, regal, or official brands.
  • A certain chocolate brand famously attempted to trademark a specific shade of purple for chocolate advertising. They lost that battle in 2013, so maybe you’re ok to use it for confectionary advertising… though don’t take our word on it!

Pink

  • Anything related to female brands, fragrance, sweets and other sugared food products.
  • Though the ‘nature vs nurture’ argument about girls being attracted pink rumbles on, it’s used widely to promote toys and gifts aimed at girls.

Blue

  • Anything related to some travelling event such as cruises, holidays but can also suit drinks (soft or alcohol) advertising as the blue represents the freshness. It is something that people are sensitive to.
  • Used heavily in visual identities, blue is a classic corporate colour
  • Used to promote ice and the cold such as ice skating or skiing. Also heavily used on bottled water.
  • Popular with financial services (banks, credit companies).

Green

  • Any calm and relaxing event or product. It can be used to advertise a zoo visit or garden party or even some products such as shower gel or shampoo – a ‘soothing’ colour.
  • It is often used to advertise sporting events such as horse races and football/rugby.

Yellow

  • The colour of creativity, bright and vibrant, yellow stands out brilliantly on dark backgrounds. Never with white though!
  • Is often related to happiness and joy. This light colour is ideal if you want to advertise for holidays or holiday products such as sun cream.
